Ed Ou: Shooting Somalia and the Arab Spring
In this interview from Canon Professional Network, Reportage photographer Ed Ou discusses his work in Somalia and the Middle East, and how he connects with his subjects.
“I try as much as I can to shoot within my vantage point of what is accessible to me, the people who will feel comfortable around me.
What I’ve found is that a lot of the people who are driving these uprisings in the Middle East are youth. And so for me it’s very fascinating to see what people my age are doing. My age [24] has a lot to do with the fact that people maybe accept me a lot more into their lives.
I think at the end of the day, if you’re an empathetic person and you have good intentions, people should be able to understand that, and they will open their lives to you.”
